THE STORY

On this frontier the big weapons are banned. By agreed convention, anything that could end the world is forbidden — so people fight with what's left: six-shooters, shotguns, dynamite, fists.

Xerlinder Gumn is a dragon with a voice like warm honey, and he wants the whole planet — the whole universe, really. He is the only being alive who can control minds, and he is winning: the people of the frontier are nothing but his slaves. The pistoleros and brawlers you fight aren't monsters. They're ordinary people with someone else's thoughts in their heads. His powers come from eating Cillium, a glowing slag from deep under the land, and he never has enough of it, because the Numans and the Forest of No Return stand in his way. The only way to fight back is the Speaking Cassette, a friend of the Numans: it plays each person a beat tuned to their own head, and while they listen, his voice can't get in.

You don't play the heroes. You play the cheap ones: would-be heroes who stand around and shoot. Next to the Numan clan they're nobodies, and the dragon has no interest in them. Their only protection is Beni's saloon, near the Forest of No Return, where the Numans stay and hold their slaughter feasts. And they're more or less immortal, ever since someone came up with eating horse. Everybody has been killing everybody since — six-shooters, grenades, dynamite. Eating horse is frowned upon now, so it happens in secret.

You ride out as one of the regulars — first Stefan Schmidt: weak, poor, smelly, and now and then, for no reason anyone can name, terrifyingly mighty. The road runs from the Hunting Grounds through Saloon Street, Mesa Canyon, the lake town of Unterstein, Boot Hill and the Vaults to Castle Donnerstein, where the dragon's army mines the largest Cillium deposit in the world.

Fall out there and the Frog, father of the forest, carries you back through the roots. You wake up face-first in Beni's stew. The meat won't let you die. And in the end the dragon comes himself — and in the final fight, his mind control fails. Dragon against riders. Axe against fists.

THE DEPTH

FROM THE DEVELOPER

I'm Philipp. I live in Wachenroth, a village in Franconia. The world of Forest of No Return is a fantasy world I developed myself, and it lived in my own notes long before the first line of code. In November 2025 I started building it. Alone.

I don't have a studio or a publisher. I have a vision and my notes. I say what the game should be, I play it, I throw out what's bad, I push until it feels right. Every day.

And yes, there's a big fuck-you in it — to political correctness, and to games built from commercial briefings. No committee signed this off. No brief, no focus group. Just the game I wanted to play. Don't take my word for it — it's in your browser.

HOW IT WAS MADE

One person — design, direction, lore, testing, every decision. No engine — riders, light, blood, smoke and the films are drawn in code. The world is his — the lore comes from his own original notes. The music is his too — he is a music producer and composed and produced the soundtrack himself. Living Voices is live AI inside fixed character sheets and world rules; nothing it says changes gameplay. The paintings — story boards, boss cards, portraits — are generated on his own machine with FLUX.2 [klein] (open model, Apache 2.0) from his prompts and reference sheets, chosen by hand from hundreds of candidates and printed through the game's own grade and grain; the playing world itself stays drawn in code.
